Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band startet the Wrecking Ball tour with an intimate show at the Apollo Theater last night.

New Bruce Springsteen album Wrecking Ball to be released March 5, 2012.
Listened to the new single We Take Care Of YOu about 5 times now and I’ve to admit that I’m very disappointed.
It’s like there’s nothing left to say for Springsteen anymore and he hides this behind a wall of pop sounds.
It’s not a harbinger of a wild album or rock record which was promsied by Landau in the recent Rolling Stone article. It’s a pop song with lots of strings, glockenspiel and the pop voice he’d discovered for the last few albums.
And what about the sources who described the album as having unexpected textures - loops and electronic percussion? The drum intro and the percussions give you flashbacks to the worst 1980s top ten hits.
And finaly this is not an angry song. If you want angry songs go back to Darkness On The Edge Of Town or Nebraska: the lyrics where angry and disillusioned and the music boosted the message - be it the rock of Darkness or the folk of Nebraska.
This doesn’t mean that I want the old times back, but lyrics which tell a story and are note covered by sweet pop sounds. Music has to be the media but not the narrative.
I’m sorry to say but yesterdays high expections are gone now :-(

Die Legende geht so, dass an diesem Tag in Colts Neck, New Jersey ein ungewöhnliches Album in der Intimität eines Schlafzimmers aufgenommen wurde.
Nun haben es Legenden so an sich, dass man nichts genaues nicht weiß. Das war schon bei Robert Johnson so und ist bei “Nebraska”, dem Springsteen Album, von dem hier die Rede sein soll nicht anders.
Springsteen, frustriert von endlosen Studiosessions, besorgte sich einen 4spur Rekorder und begann darauf Demos für die E Street Band einzuspielen. Und das alles an diesem einen Tag.
Die Geschichte setzt so fort, dass er die Kassette wochenlang in einer Jackentasche bei sich trug, bevor er sie endlich seiner Band vorspielte. Die daraus resultierenden “Electric Nebraska Sessions” sollten den anspruchsvollen Springsteen nicht zufrieden stellen und so wurde die Idee geboren, ein akustisches Album einzuspielen. Doch auch das brachte kein befriedigendes Ergebnis und die Audiotechniker wurden vor die Aufgabe gestellt das Demotape auf Veröffentlichung zu trimmen. So weit, so die Legende.
Fakt und nicht Legende ist, dass Springsteen einer der Musiker mit dem größten Bootleg Katalog ist. Und nicht nur Live-Aufnahmen, sondern, vor allem bis Mitte der 1980er, auch unzählige Studio und Demo-Aufnahmen. So hat auch das Originaltape von besagtem 3. Jänner seinen Weg an die interessierte Öffentlichkeit gefunden: The Lost Masters - Alone in Colts Neck (The Complete Nebraska Session).
Darauf findet sich ein Großteil des veröffentlichten Albums, aber auch einiges, das dann doch elektrifiziert auf Vinyl erschien: Downbound Train, das Leichtgewicht Pink Cadillac und das Lied, das Springsteen endgültig zum Superstar machte - Born In The USA. Letzteres wurde auf der Outtake Sammlung Tracks dann auch in der Originalversion veröffentlich. Wohl, um die Missverständnisse, die darum immer wieder kursierten endgültig auszuräumen.
Die alternativen Takes legen nahe, dass trotz der eher einfachen Technik auch hier mit der für Springsteen üblichen Akribie gearbeitet, aufgenommen und gemischt wurde. Dass das alles an einem Tag passiert sein sollte, legt den Schluss nahe, dass dieser 3. Jänner doch mehr als 24 Stunden hatte ;-)
Und für Aficionados von Interesse ist, was hier nicht zu finden ist. Neben Overdubs auch das Lied “My Fathers House” und die B-Seite “The Big Payback”.
All das zeigt natürlich nur, dass Springsteen ein guter Geschichtenzähler ist. Und dieses Talent nicht nur in seinen Liedern, sondern auch für seine Veröffentlichung zu nutzen wusste. Abseits aller Legendenbildung ist “Nebraska” dennoch eines der wichtigsten Werke der Rockgeschichte, dessen Bedeutung dadurch nur noch verstärkt wurde. Welches Major Label wäre heute bereit, so ein Album zu veröffentlichen und dafür in PR zu investieren?
Still at the end of every hard earned day people find a reason to believe.
P.S. Unter Bootleggern gilt das verlorene Album “Electric Nebraska” als Holy Grail. Und laut Max Weinberg, dem Schlagzeuger existiert dieses auch: “the E Street Band actually did record all of Nebraska and it was killing […] It was all very hard-edged. As great as it was, it wasn’t what Bruce wanted to release. There is a full band Nebraska album, all of those songs are in the can somewhere.”
